Samsmard

Samsmard is a large peninsula located south of the Northern Dividing Range, historically inhabited by the Ulthur peoples and currently divided between seven distinct states. The peninsula is characterized by its diverse geography, ranging from coastal lowlands to mountainous highlands, and serves as home to several anthropomorphic species including the cat-like Ulthur races, the diminutive mouse-people of Ibree, and the insect-like Ghoga!.

Geography

Samsmard extends southward from the Northern Dividing Range, forming a natural barrier that has historically separated the peninsula from the human kingdoms to the north. The peninsula is bisected by a northerly Inland Sea; a large and meandering bay to the south and in the middle stands the Isthmus, a narrow land bridge that has served as a crucial defensive position, cultural crossroads and in “modern times,” independent trade capital.

Samsmard is a varied land, with forests and jungles found along the Southern and Northwestern coasts, vast plains in the West and rugged deserts and wastelands throughout.

The western half of Samsmard, called Dick Shit is characterized by its relative abundance of rolling hills and fertile valleys, while the eastern territories are characterized by more rugged terrain including extensive mountain ranges and desert regions. The Central Highlands contain the secluded mountain kingdom of Ibree, tucked away in nearly inaccessible peaks that have allowed its inhabitants to maintain their independence throughout the region's tumultuous history.

The southern central region consists primarily of barren desert, while the eastern coastline is dominated by forests and extensive wetlands. The northern and western portions of the eastern territories feature predominantly mountainous terrain interspersed with desert areas.

Demographics

Ulthur Peoples

The peninsula's original inhabitants consist of two closely related cat-like races:

Belth: The larger of the two Ulthur races, the Belth have traditionally served as the political and military leaders of Samsmard. Following the Tozzen invasions, they underwent a significant cultural transformation, abandoning their formerly secular society in favor of theocratic rule.

Juth: The second Ulthur race, the Juth have maintained close alliance with the Belth throughout their shared history. Together, these peoples are collectively known as the Ulth-folk.

Kingdom of Ibree

Hidden within the Central Highlands lies the small kingdom of Ibree, inhabited by the Bree—mouse-people who stand less than a quarter the height of typical humans or Ulthur. Their remote mountain stronghold has largely protected them from the conflicts that have shaped the rest of Samsmard.

Tozzen Peoples

The eastern regions of Samsmard are now controlled by three distinct races collectively known as the Tozzen-folk:

- Ejek: The largest and most physically imposing of the Tozzen races, bearing resemblance to the ogres of northern folklore - Fezek: A warrior race similar in nature to orcs, known for their martial prowess - Ketu: The smallest but most numerous Tozzen race, comparable to goblins in stature and cunning

### Ghoga!

The barren southern desert regions are inhabited by the Ghoga! (the exclamation point forms part of their species name), an insect-like people who have adapted to the harsh desert environment of central Samsmard.

## History

### Early Period

For centuries before the arrival of the Tozzen peoples, Samsmard was unified under Ulthur rule. The Belthane Kingdom reached its zenith during this period, constructing magnificent architectural works throughout the peninsula. Many of these structures survive in the western territories, though others lie in ruins following subsequent conflicts.

### The Tozzen Migration

The course of Samsmard's history changed dramatically when the Tozzen-folk were expelled from the northern human kingdoms and forced over the Northern Dividing Range into the peninsula. This migration initiated what historians term the Tozzen Wars, decades of conflict that brought widespread destruction, plunder, and economic collapse to the region.

### The Great Abandonment

Faced with mounting losses and unable to defend the entire peninsula, a united council of Belth and Juth rulers made the strategic decision to abandon all Ulth-folk territories east of the Isthmus. They established fortified defensive positions along this geographic boundary, sacrificing eastern Samsmard to preserve their core western territories.

The resulting stalemate eventually evolved into an uneasy peace, with territorial boundaries that have remained largely unchanged since the end of the active conflict period.

### Religious Transformation

The trauma of the Tozzen Wars led to a fundamental transformation in Ulthur society. Previously secular, the Belth in particular embraced religion as both explanation for their defeats and guide for their future. The surviving clergy, who had somehow maintained their numbers throughout the conflicts, preached that divine displeasure had caused the calamities.

This religious awakening resulted in the establishment of a theocratic government among the Belth, with religious leaders assuming political control—a system that continues to the present day.

## Politics and Government

Samsmard is currently divided into seven distinct political entities, each controlling territory that largely reflects the geographic and ethnic divisions established following the Tozzen Wars.

### Western Samsmard

Holy State of Gracked: The Belth territories are organized as a theocratic state, with religious authorities holding primary political power. This represents a significant departure from their pre-war secular traditions.

Urb Ickleek: The Juth state occupies the northern half of the western portion of Samsmard, maintaining its historical alliance with the Belth while preserving its own distinct political structure.

### Central Highlands

Kingdom of Ibree: The Bree maintain their independence through geographic isolation, ruling their mountain kingdom with minimal external interference.

### Eastern Samsmard

Kuje: The Ejek control the largest territory in eastern Samsmard, encompassing the entire western and northern portions of the eastern region. This vast domain consists primarily of mountainous terrain and desert areas.

Vasit Kennot: The Fezek state represents a collection of united tribes that have faced significant territorial losses in recent conflicts with Kuje. They now control only a small mountainous region in the mid-eastern area of the peninsula.

Nosop: The Ketu state, while loosely organized, spans most of Samsmard's eastern coastline. Despite its loose political structure, Nosop benefits from a large population base and controls valuable forested and wetland territories.

### Southern Desert

Kolalak: Located in the barren south-central desert, this state is controlled by the Ghoga! and represents the most environmentally challenging territory on the peninsula.

## Culture and Society

### Architecture

The peninsula contains numerous examples of Belthane architectural achievement, primarily concentrated in the western regions. These structures represent the pinnacle of Ulthur civilization during the pre-war period. Eastern territories contain various ruins, some damaged by warfare and others allegedly affected by “Tozzen-craft”—the nature of which remains a subject of scholarly debate.

### Technology

Samsmard's civilizations operate at a technological level comparable to 12th-century European standards, with variations between different peoples reflecting their cultural priorities and available resources.
